  • The Riksdag critical towards EU proposal on amending decision on system for own resources

    The EU budget’s revenues are known as own resources and consist, primarily, of contributions from the member states. There are currently four types of own resources, but the European Commission has proposed the introduction of a further three types, two of which are revisions of previously presented proposals, and one is new.

  • Gift from the Riksdag and the Government to mark the King's 50 years on the throne

    On 13 September, the Speaker Andreas Norlén and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson congratulated His Majesty The King on 50 years on the throne from 1973–2023. At a reception at the Royal Palace, they presented a gift from the Riksdag and the Government – a tapestry measuring eight square metres, based on a watercolour by the artist Lars Lerin.

    The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal for amendments to legislation on secret investigative measures.

  • The new parliamentary working year has started

    The new parliamentary working year – the 2023/24 Riksdag session – started on Tuesday 12 September. At 11 a.m. the members of the Riksdag convened for a roll-call in the Chamber. This was later followed by the ceremony for the opening of the Riksdag session. Both events can be watched on-demand via the webcast service on the Riksdag website and social media.   • Resilience, climate and biological diversity at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference

    The 32nd Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) took place in Berlin on 27–29 August. The title for this year’s conference was “Strengthened resilience in the democratic Baltic Sea region – boosting democratic, digital and marine resilience and safeguarding reliable neighbourly relations and cooperation”.

  • Nordic-Baltic Conference of Speakers at the Riksdag

    The annual Nordic-Baltic Conference of Speakers took place at the Riksdag on 24–25 August. The Conference was hosted by the Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén.

  • Ukrainian President visits Sweden

    The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Sweden on 19 August. During a meeting with the President and the leaders of the parties represented in the Riksdag at Harpsund, the Speaker Andreas Norlén underlined the Riksdag's unanimous support for Ukraine's fight for freedom. The visit also included talks with the Government and a meeting with the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

  • Further military equipment to be donated to Ukraine

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of donating further military equipment to Ukraine. By way of an authorisation, the Government has been given the right to decide to donate military equipment in the form of spare parts and emergency supplies at a value of a maximum of SEK 1.1 billion, and in the form of ammunition with ammunition components, mine-clearance equipment and transport vehicles at a value of a maximum of SEK 2.15 billion.

    On 19–23 June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, PACE, held its summer session. Eight MPs from the Swedish delegation participated.

  • Finnish Speaker visits the Riksdag

    A new government took office in Finland following the elections to the Eduskunta – the Finnish Parliament – on 2 April, and Jussi Halla-aho was elected as the new Speaker last week. He paid a visit to the Swedish Parliament on 26 June.

    When the Riksdag held an interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe, discussions focused on how parliamentarians can help to safeguard and strengthen democracy and the rule of law.

    15 September 2023 will be a temporary public flag day to celebrate the 50th anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s accession to the throne. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal.

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's legislative proposal which will enable the establishment of the Payment Authority. The purpose of the new agency is to prevent, check and monitor erroneous welfare system payments.

    The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal on a new law with special provisions on police powers near border areas.

    The Riksdag calls on the Government by way of announcement to actively seek to achieve consensus within the EU to list the state-funded Russian Wagner Group as a terrorist group under the EU’s terrorist sanctions.

  • Yes to the Government’s spring amending budget

    The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposals in the spring amending budget concerning changes in state expenditure during 2023. One of these is a new national target for the composition of electricity production for 2040.

  • Democracy and the rule of law on the agenda when the Riksdag hosts the interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe

    On 18–19 June, the Riksdag will host an interparliamentary conference on democracy in Europe. During the conference, primarily members from the EU’s national parliaments and the European Parliament will meet to discuss democracy and the rule of law.

    A debate between party leaders was held at the Riksdag on Wednesday 14 June. During the debate, the leaders of all the parties represented in the Riksdag had the opportunity to argue in favour of the policies they wish to pursue.
