On Thursday 15 October, the Speaker's proposal for a candidate for Prime Minister was examined in the Chamber. The Speaker's proposal was Magdalena Andersson (SocDem). The Riksdag rejected the Speaker’s proposal, as more than half of the members of the Riksdag voted against it.
If more than half of the members of the Riksdag, that is at least 175 members, vote against the Speaker's proposal for a new Prime Minister, it is rejected. Otherwise, it is approved.

Webcasts: Examination of proposal for a candidate for Prime Minister
What happens next?
If a proposal for Prime Minister does not receive sufficient support in a vote in the Riksdag, the Speaker can present a new proposal for Prime Minister. In total, the Speaker can present four proposals for a candidate for Prime Minister. If none of the proposals is approved, an extraordinary election to the Riksdag must be held within three months.
Background
Elections to the Riksdag took place on Sunday 13 September. On 17 September, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party) asked to be discharged from his assignment as Prime Minister and the Speaker decided to discharge the Prime Minister and other ministers.
The Speaker has the task of preparing a proposal for a new Prime Minister for the Riksdag to take a stand on. The assignment includes interview rounds with representatives of all the parties in the Riksdag and deliberations with the Deputy Speakers. The Speaker also keeps King Carl XVI Gustaf informed of the situation regarding the assignment of presenting a proposal for a new Prime Minister. Until a new government has taken office at a Council of State, Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party) is Prime Minister in a caretaker government consisting of representatives from the Moderate Party, Christian Democrats and Liberal Party.
