is a longstanding tradition in Sweden and of fundamental constitutional significance. The principle of local
self-government
has been enshrined in the Constitution as an integral part of democratic government in Sweden. Sweden has also ratified the European Charter of Local
Self-Government.

at local and regional level is exercised, respectively, by municipalities and county councils, which are responsible for vital public services in a variety of welfare sectors.
