Elections to various posts in the Riksdag following parliamentary elections
When a new Riksdag has gathered following the parliamentary elections, elections are held to various posts in the Riksdag. The members of the Riksdag elect the Speaker and Deputy Speakers, members of the parliamentary committees and Committee on EU Affairs and members of the Riksdag’s other boards and bodies.
Election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers
When the Riksdag meets for the first time after the elections, the members decide which member among them is to become the new Speaker and which three are to become the Deputy Speakers of the Riksdag. The Speakers are elected individually in the following order: Speaker, First Deputy Speaker, Second Deputy Speaker, Third Deputy Speaker. They are elected for one electoral period at a time. It is the party groups in the Riksdag that nominate candidates to the various Speaker posts. This year, the Riksdag will elect the Speaker and Deputy Speakers on 28 September.
Elections to the parliamentary committees and Committee on EU Affairs
One of the Riksdag’s first tasks after the elections is to elect the members and deputy members of all the parliamentary committees and the Committee on EU Affairs. There are 15 parliamentary committees with responsibility for different matters: a Committee on Finance, Committee on Education, Committee on Cultural Affairs, and so on. It is here that the members of the Riksdag prepare most of the Riksdag’s decisions before the decisions are taken in the Chamber. The Riksdag’s Committee on EU Affairs is where the Government obtains support for its EU policies.
A nominations committee is appointed in connection with the roll-call in the Chamber at the start of the parliamentary year. This committee consists of members of each of the parties represented in the Riksdag. The nominations committee proposes how many members there should be in each committee and proposes which members should fill the seats. The parties can present their nominations for the various committees to the nominations committee.
The Riksdag decides which members will make up each of the parliamentary committees and the Committee on EU Affairs, based on the proposals from the nominations committee. This year the Riksdag will elect the members of the parliamentary committees and the Committee on EU Affairs on 6 October.
Elections to boards and other Riksdag bodies
Another of the Riksdag’s tasks after the elections is to appoint members to the Riksdag’s various boards and other Riksdag bodies. It is the nominations committee that proposes which members are to be included in the boards and Riksdag bodies.
The members of the Riksdag Board and Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs will be elected on 6 October.
On 13 October, the Riksdag will elect the members of the War Delegation, the General Council of the Riksbank, the Riksdag Appeals Board, the Swedish Delegation to the Nordic Council, the Swedish Delegation to the OSCE and the Swedish Delegation to the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol.
On 20 October, the Riksdag will elect the members of the Board of the Riksbanken Jubileumsfond Foundation, the Swedish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Judges Proposals Board.
The Riksdag will elect the members of most boards and other Riksdag bodies on different occasions during the autumn. Elections to some boards and bodies will also take place in 2027.
