Committees

In the parliamentary committees, the Riksdag’s decisions are prepared by the members of the Riksdag. In the Committee on European Union (EU) Affairs, the Government obtains support for its EU policies. Each of the parliamentary committees and the Committee on EU Affairs are like a miniature Riksdag, and the larger a party is, the more seats it has.

The parliamentary committees prepare decisions

The hub of the work of the Riksdag is the 15 parliamentary committees. This is where the members prepare the Riksdag’s decisions. When a committee has presented its proposal for a decision, all 349 members of the Riksdag adopt a position on the proposal. Each committee is made up of 17 members of the Riksdag. The committees are like a miniature Riksdag, which means that the composition of members in each committee reflects the balance of power in the Riksdag as a whole.

Consultation on EU matters

The Government is obliged to consult with the Riksdag on EU matters. This means that the Government discusses with the Riksdag what line Sweden should take on various matters in the EU. The Government holds discussions with the parliamentary committees, but also with a special body for consultation – the Committee on European Union Affairs. Unlike the parliamentary committees, the Committee on EU Affairs does not prepare proposals for decisions by the Riksdag.
