Elections to the Riksdag

Elections to the Riksdag will take place on 13 September. The voters then have the opportunity to determine which candidates will represent them in the Riksdag for the next four years. On the same day, elections will also be held to Sweden’s municipalities and regions.

Elections to the Riksdag
It is the elections to the Riksdag that determine which individuals will represent the Swedish people in Riksdag. Here you can learn who is allowed to vote and how the seats in the Riksdag are distributed.
How to vote
The Election Authority is responsible for organising elections. On the Election Authority website, you will find information about how and where to vote in the 2026 elections.
Important dates in the run-up to the elections
9 April
Last day to register candidates
The last day for parties to register candidates for election.
24 July
Expatriate Swedes receive their voting cards
Swedish citizens who have moved abroad receive their voting cards.

30 July
Postal votes may be sent from abroad
From 30 July, it is possible to send postal votes from abroad.

20 August
Advance voting from abroad starts
Embassies and consulates open for advance voting at the earliest on 20 August.

26 August
Everyone should have received their voting card
If you live in Sweden and are entitled to vote in any of the 2026 elections, you should have received your voting card by 26 August at the latest.
Advance voting in Sweden starts
From this date, it is possible to vote in advance in Sweden. You can do so in any of the designated locations for advance voting, throughout the country.
13 September
Election day
Elections to the Riksdag, regional and municipal councils will take place on 13 September. All polling stations will be open between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
14 September
Final count of the votes starts
The county administrative board begins the final vote count. It is only when the county administrative board has completed the counting of votes, about a week after election day, that there is a final election result.

It is estimated that the final results of the 2026 elections to the Riksdag will be ready the weekend after Election Day.
28 September
The newly elected Riksdag meets
The newly elected Riksdag meets for the first time. At the meeting, a roll-call of the members of parliament is held. After the roll-call, the Riksdag elects the Speaker and three Deputy Speakers.
29 September
Opening of the Riksdag session
The opening of the Riksdag session. This marks the start of the new parliamentary working year, the 2026/27 Riksdag session.
6 October
Members are elected to the committees
The Riksdag elects the members of the various committees and the Committee on EU Affairs. On this day, members of the Riksdag Board and the Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs are also elected.
13 October
Members are elected to Riksdag bodies
The Riksdag elects members of various Riksdag bodies such as the War Delegation, the Swedish Delegation to the Nordic Council, the Swedish Delegation to the OSCE and the Swedish Delegation to the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group for Europol.
20 October
Members are elected to other bodies including the Riksdag boards
The Riksdag elects the members of the Board of the Riksbanken Jubileumsfond Foundation, the Swedish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Judges Proposals Board. The Riksdag will elect the members of most of the other boards and other Riksdag bodies on different occasions during the autumn. Elections to some boards and bodies will also take place in 2027.
