About the Nordic Council

The Nordic Council was founded in 1952 and consists of 87 elected members of Parliament from Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Åland. The Riksdag elects 20 ordinary members and 20 deputy members to the Swedish delegation each year.

Nordic value

The members of the Nordic Council work together to make the Nordic region a good region to live and work in. Many issues concern border obstacles and simplifying the rules for those who live in one Nordic country and work in another. Nordic cooperation also promotes peace and democratic development.

Makes recommendations to governments

The Nordic Council takes initiatives and makes recommendations on various issues to the Nordic Council of Ministers and/or to one or more Nordic governments. Many recommendations lead to concrete measures or new laws in the member countries. The Council also monitors the implementation of the recommendations. The work of the Nordic Council is governed by the Helsinki Treaty of 1962 and the Council's rules of procedure.
