Next week, the new Riksdag will meet and will start the parliamentary working year. On Monday 28 September there will be a roll-call for the members of the Riksdag. This will be followed by the election of the Speakers and presentation of the party group leaders. The same day also marks the start of the general private members’ motions period. On the following day, Tuesday 29 September, the ceremony for the opening of the Riksdag session will take place. The events of both days can be followed on the Riksdag website and on social media.
28 September: Roll-call and election of Speakers
The roll-call to the Riksdag will take place at 11 a.m. on 28 September, the day before the opening of the Riksdag session. The Riksdag will then elect its Speaker and Deputy Speakers, and will announce the names of the party group leaders. The Riksdag will also appoint a Nominations Committee with the task of proposing members for the parliamentary committees. The roll-call and elections will be broadcast live on the Riksdag webcast service.

The start of the general private members’ motions period
The general private members’ motions period will also start on Monday 28 September at 11 a.m. During this period, the members of the Riksdag can submit motions – proposals – on virtually any issue that the Riksdag can take decisions on, for example, on amendments to legislation or urging the Government to appoint an inquiry. The general private members’ motions period 2026 starts on 28 September and continues until the motions period for the Budget Bill ends.

29 September – the opening of the Riksdag session 2026
The opening of the Riksdag session will take place on 29 September 2026. This marks the start of the new working year for the 349 members of the Riksdag – the 2026/27 Riksdag session.
12.45 The webcast from the opening of the Riksdag session starts. The guests arrive at Riksplan. The Swedish Royal Army Band performs and the Guards Regiment are on parade at Riksplan.
2 p.m. The opening ceremony starts in the Chamber. At the request of the Speaker, HM The King declares the 2026/27 Riksdag session open. The programme in the Chamber also includes the Royal Anthem, musical performances, the National Anthem and exit music.
