The possibility to use cash to be improved (FiU39)

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to improve the possibility to use cash.
The following measures are included in the proposal:
- Food shops and chemists shall, with certain exceptions, be obliged to accept cash at physical points of sale with manned checkouts.
- Banks shall be obliged to provide consumers with places for the deposit of cash to a satisfactory extent throughout the country.
- There are to be services available tailored to the needs of companies to manage change and deposit daily takings.
The amendments will come into force on 1 July 2026.
The Riksdag has also decided to call on the Government by way of an announcement to investigate whether certain public services may also be subject to the obligation to accept cash payments proposed for food shops and chemists.
