Obligation to provide information for certain e-identification companies

Published:

Law enforcement authorities will be able to contact an e-identification company to obtain information about a person’s use of e-identification for financial companies.  According to the Government, the purpose of the proposal is to prevent, impede and detect more serious crimes. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal.

An e-identification is an electronic identity document that can be used to identify the holder remotely. In the Swedish market, there are currently several private actors that provide e-identification services.

The obligation to provide information for companies providing crypto assets and crypto-related services will also be expanded. The obligation to provide information means that law enforcement authorities have the right to access information about the circumstances of individuals held by companies that are otherwise covered by the duty of confidentiality.

The new rules will come into force on 1 May 2026.
