The Commission Work Programme has been examined

The Riksdag has examined the European Commission’s Work Programme for 2025. The Riksdag notes that the Work Programme has been presented at a time characterised by great geopolitical uncertainty, where the rules-based international order is being challenged.

The EU faces several challenges which can only be dealt with by a strong, united Europe. The Riksdag underlines that a great deal has happened in the fields of foreign, security and trade policy since the programme was published. The Riksdag welcomes the fact that the Commission is clear in stating that the EU is unwavering in its solidarity with Ukraine. The Work Programme raises measures to increase pressure on Russia, such as sanctions, by holding Russia legally accountable and demands for financial compensation.

The Riksdag shares the opinion that EU enlargement is a geostrategic investment for peace, security, stability and prosperity in Europe. It is in Sweden’s interests to help candidate countries move closer to EU membership.

The Commission has presented a proposal for a European Democracy Shield. Its purpose is to strengthen protection of the EU’s democratic systems and counteract disinformation and foreign interference in democratic processes. The Riksdag welcomes the proposal, while underlining that EU measures must be limited to those that give clear added value in relation to national competence and national solutions.

The Riksdag put the Statement on file, which means that the matter was closed.
