Greater opportunities to use biometrics in law enforcement

Published:

The Riksdag voted in favour of amendments, among other things, to the Code of Judicial Procedure and the Criminal Data Act, which will give law enforcement authorities extended opportunities to use biometrics. The purpose is to help solve more crimes and to bring more perpetrators to justice.

The legislative amendments mean, among other things:

  • biometric data may be enrolled, registered and used to a greater extent for the investigation of crimes;
  • the current police records of DNA profiles, fingerprints and descriptions will be replaced by new biometric records;
  • in connection with preliminary investigations into certain serious crimes, biometric comparisons of facial images and fingerprints of suspected perpetrators may be made with the Swedish Migration Agency’s registers of fingerprints and photographs;
  • DNA-based genealogy will be permitted under certain conditions in connection with murder and gross rape offences.

The amendments will come into force on 1 July 2025.
