The former Speaker and member of the Riksdag Birgitta Dahl passed away on 26 November.

Birgitta Dahl was elected to the Riksdag for the Social Democratic Party in 1969. She was the Speaker of the Riksdag between 1994 and 2002. Birgitta Dahl has also been, among other things, Deputy Chair of the Committee on Social Insurance and a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the War Delegation, the Swedish delegation to the Nordic Council and the Riksdag Board.

“I have received the sad news of the death of former Speaker Birgitta Dahl. My thoughts go her family, friends and former colleagues. Birgitta Dahl was widely appreciated and deeply respected in her role as Speaker. She fought with great energy, courage and commitment for, among other things, gender equality issues in the Riksdag. At the initiative of Birgitta Dahl, the Riksdag’s childcare services and fixed voting times were introduced in order to make it easier to combine the assignment as a member with family life”, says the Speaker Andreas Norlén.
