It will be easier to change gender

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the proposal of the Committee on Health and Welfare for a new act on certain genital surgery, a new act on establishment of gender in certain cases, and a proposal for an act repealing the current Act on Establishing Gender Identity in Certain Cases.
The proposals mean that the procedure for changing the official gender shown in the population register will be distinguished from the procedures for genital surgery. Permission will not be required from the National Board of Health and Welfare to undergo such genital surgery to make the individual's body better match their gender identity. It will be easier to change gender in the population register.
A person who has reached the age of 16 shall be able to have the gender shown in the population register changed following a simplified examination of their gender identity.
The proposal upon which the decision is based was submitted in the form of a committee initiative. This means that the proposal was initiated by a parliamentary committee, and that it did not originate from a government bill or a private members motion, which is otherwise normally the case.
The acts will come into force on 1 July 2025.
The Riksdag has called on the Government by way of four announcements to consider the need for regulations, national knowledge support, prevention of criminal behaviour and follow-up of application.
