About Europe Day

On 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented the Schuman Declaration. In this declaration, he proposed that France and Germany should cooperate on the production of coal and steel, and he welcomed other European countries to join them. The aim was to develop the industry after World War II and to reduce the risk of future conflicts by preventing military rearmament. Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May in memory of the Schuman Declaration, which marked the start of today’s European Union.
