Serving of food no longer a requirement for licence to serve alcohol
Published:
The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to abolish the requirement that food be served and of having one's own kitchen in order to be granted a licence to serve alcohol. The requirements relating to seating and drink bars will also be abolished. In addition, the requirement that catering businesses have their own kitchen in order to be granted a licence to serve alcohol will be abolished, as will the requirement that food must be served in order to be permitted to serve light beer.
The purpose is to simplify the rules on licences to serve alcohol while maintaining a framework of strong protective legislation.
The new rules will come into force on 1 June 2026.
