More measures to combat honour-based violence

Published:

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to introduce more measures to combat honour-based violence and oppression. In concrete terms, the proposal involves filling the gaps that exist in current legislation to strengthen protection under criminal and civil law against certain types of marriage.

Among other things, the decision means that:

  • a new offence in the form of a travel for the purpose of marriage abroad offence involving children will be introduced;
  • more stringent penalties will be introduced for marriage offences, child marriage offences and travel for the purpose of marriage abroad offences;
  • it will be possible to use secret coercive measures in investigations into coerced marriages and child marriage offences;
  • the ban on recognition of prohibited marriages abroad will apply without exceptions.

The new rules will come into force on 2 July 2026.
