Changed rules to boost security at public gatherings

Published:

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to create secure conditions for meetings and demonstrations. Some of the consequences of the decision are:

  • the Swedish Police Authority will be given clearer powers to change the time or place of a public gathering;
  • the Swedish Police Authority will be able, in certain cases, to prohibit a public gathering at a certain time or place instead of prohibiting it completely;
  • it will be possible to cancel a public gathering or public event with regard to a risk to people’s lives or health;
  • the Swedish Police Authority will be given extended powers to intervene against individuals who disturb public order and fail to comply with decisions.

The amendments will come into force on 1 July 2026.
