Swedish Tax Agency to be given more modern control measures

Published:

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to modernise the Swedish Tax Agency’s control measures.

The proposal will allow the scrutiny of company bookkeeping via the internet. Many companies store their bookkeeping in cloud-based services. Under current rules, the Tax Agency cannot connect to the internet to scrutinise company bookkeeping.  Instead, a company must send in a copy of its bookkeeping to the Tax Agency.

Under the new rules, the Tax Agency will be able to connect directly and scrutinise bookkeeping, which will reduce the administration burden for both companies and the Tax Agency. In addition to this, the Tax Agency will more easily be able to discover whether a company is attempting to withhold information.

The new rules will come into force on 1 July 2026.
