Swedish prison sentences can be served temporarily abroad
Published:
The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal to approve the agreement between Sweden and Estonia which will allow the temporary enforcement of Swedish prison sentences in Estonia.
On 18 June 2025, an agreement was signed between Sweden and Estonia that allows people sentenced to prison in Sweden to temporarily serve their sentence in an Estonian institution, where the Estonian Prison and Probation Service is responsible for enforcement. The purpose of the agreement is to help address the serious lack of space in the Swedish Prison Service.
The Riksdag has now approved the agreement and adopted the proposed legislative amendments necessary in connection with the agreement.
The new provisions of law will come into force on 3 July 2026.
