Returns to increase

The Government wishes to make work on encouraging people to return to their home countries more efficient and implement several amendments to laws including the Aliens Act. The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal.

In order to streamline this work, the Government proposes that the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish and the Swedish Migration Agency should have better tools to implement decisions regarding refusal-of-entry and expulsion. The Government proposes a new obligation for the Swedish Public Employment Service, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, the Prison and Probation Service, the Swedish Enforcement Authority the Swedish Pensions Agency and the Swedish Tax Agency to submit information about an alien to the Swedish Police Authority, on their own initiative, if there is reason to assume that he or she does not have the right to stay in Sweden.

The proposal contains the possibility for the authorities to be provided with further tools to clarify the identity of aliens. The possibility to take care of and search an alien’s mobile phone will be introduced, if it can be assumed to contain information about the alien’s identity. In addition, it will be possible to use fingerprints and photographs to a greater extent and more efficiently than today.

The amendments will come into force on 13 July 2026.
