Greater opportunities for record checks in connection with employment in a municipality
Published:
The Riksdag voted in favour of municipalities being given greater opportunities to carry out record checks in connection with employment.
According to the decision, municipalities will be able to carry out checks of the records of people who will work in the homes of the elderly or adults with disabilities. It will also be possible to carry out record checks of people who will be employed in senior positions in municipalities. In addition, there will be greater opportunities to check the records of people who are being hired to work with children.
This means that municipalities will be able, in more cases than today, to obtain information from the criminal records – and in certain cases from the records of suspected offenders – prior to employing someone.
The purpose of the new rules is to prevent people with criminal or harmful intentions from being employed in municipal activities.
The new laws and amendments will come into force on 1 March 2026.
