Faster expansion of prisons and detention centres

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal to make it possible to grant temporary building permits for prisons and detention centres to a greater extent.
In addition, the Riksdag voted in favour of a proposal to give the Government the power, under certain conditions, to issue regulations on necessary and temporary exemptions from the Planning and Building Act.
The background to the decision is the current shortage of places in prisons and detention centres. Current and proposed more stringent penalties also mean that the need for places in prisons and detention centres will increase.
The new rules will come into force on 1 July 2026.
