Abolished registration requirement before applying for parental benefits
Published:
The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal that the registration requirement before applying for parental benefit should be removed. The Riksdag has also voted in favour of the Government’s proposal that certain other parts of the Social Security Code be adapted to current legislation or be corrected.
The purpose of this is to make it easier and simpler for parents who are planning their parental leave and applying for parental benefit.
The amendment can also contribute to more efficient administration for the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), who believe that registration no longer serves any purpose for control or processing.
The amendment regarding the abolition of the registration requirement will come into force on 1 July 2026. Other legislative amendments will come into force on 31 May 2026 but will be applied for the period from 1 January 2026 onwards.
