New rules on geographical indications and international trademarks

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal concerning new rules on geographical indications and international trade marks. The background to the Government's proposal is that the EU has adopted a new regulation extending the protection of geographical indications to include craft and industrial products.

The fact that a geographical indication is protected means that only producers who meet certain requirements that apply to the indication may use it when labelling or marketing a product. Examples of such protected indications are Kalix vendace, Champagne and Parma ham.

The new regulations will come into force on 1 December 2025.
