Public authorities will be able to suspend employees
Published:
The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to allow public authorities to suspend employees.
This possibility will apply when an employee is in a situation which has led to dismissal or which is likely to lead to termination or dismissal.
The proposal includes these rules:
- Suspension will apply immediately and for a certain period which may not exceed two months at a time.
- If the collective agreement does not state otherwise, the employee will be allowed to keep his or her salary and other employment benefits during the period during which he or she is suspended.
- If the employee is a member of a trade union, the employer will need to inform the employee organisation of the suspension. If this is not done, the employer may be entitled to compensation. This also applies if the employer violates certain procedural regulations.
The amendments will come into force on 1 January 2026.
