New decision-making procedure for participation in NATO’s overall deterrence and defence activities

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal on a clear decision-making procedure for participation in NATO’s overall deterrence and defence activities. The proposal states that a new regulation will be introduced on how decisions to deploy Swedish armed forces in such activities will be taken.
According to the proposal, the Riksdag will remain the decision-maker in future on the framework for Swedish participation in NATO. In urgent situations, however, the Government will have its own mandate to deploy numerically restricted armed forces for a limited period.
The amendments will come into force on 1 December 2025.
