The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government's proposal that more people should be able to serve their prison sentences with electronic monitoring, that is using an ankle tag.

In summary, the Government’s proposal contains the following:

  • It will be possible for prison sentences of up to one year and six months to be served with electronic monitoring. Today, the limit for this is six months. The sentenced person must be in his or her home or in newly established supervised accommodation run by the Prison and Probation Service.
  • If the penalty exceeds six months, a more in-depth suitability examination has to be carried out before a decision is made on electronic monitoring in the home.
  • A new way of enforcing prison sentences, that is electronic monitoring in the home, is to be introduced. It will apply to prison sentences of not more than one year and six months.

The new act will come into force on 1 January 2026. However, in the case of enforcement of supervised accommodation, the new act will come into force for the first time on 1 June 2026.
