Extended opportunities to use video surveillance in law enforcement and other public activities
Published:
The Riksdag voted in favour of a proposal from the Government, among other things enabling extended opportunities to use video surveillance. The proposal means, for example, that public sector actors will no longer require a permit for video surveillance.
In addition, law enforcement authorities will be able to conduct video surveillance in more places than they do today. These authorities will also have better opportunities to conduct video surveillance in urgent cases.
In order to make it possible for the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Security Service to use technology with automatic number plate recognition technology (ANPR) throughout the country, a new exemption will also be made to the requirement that interests should be balanced when conducting video surveillance.
The new regulations will come into force on 1 April 2025.
