The Speaker participates in memorial ceremony in Auschwitz

On 27 January 2025, the Speaker Andreas Norlén will participate in a memorial ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The memorial ceremony is organised by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and will gather a large number of Auschwitz survivors, as well as heads of state and government.

The Swedish delegation will be led by HRH The Crown Princess. The Prime Minister and Minister for Culture are also included in the delegation. A number of Swedish Auschwitz survivors will participate in the memorial ceremony. In total, there will be approximately 3,000 participants in the ceremony.

The programme includes addresses by Auschwitz survivors, prayers and a light ceremony at the memorial. One of the speakers is Leon Weintraub, an Auschwitz survivor now resident in Sweden.

Background

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Approximately one million Jews were murdered at the camp, as well as 200,000 other prisoners.
