Marburg virus to be classed as a virus constituting a danger to society

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal that infection with Marburg virus be classified as a disease constituting a danger to society under the Communicable Diseases Act.

Diseases constituting a danger to society refer to diseases causing public danger that can spread in society causing serious disruption or imminent risk of serious disruption in socially important functions and which require extraordinary infection control measures. The Marburg virus is an RNA virus belonging to the filovirus family, which can cause haemorrhagic fever. The same virus family also includes Ebola virus.

The amendment will come into force on 25 February 2025.
