New legislation on statutory limitations in the field of criminal law

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal for new legislation on statutory limitations in the field of criminal law. Among other things, the statutory limitation period for serious offences will be extended and no statutory limitation period will apply to offences that may result in a lifetime imprisonment.

According to the new rules, the statutory limitation period for gross violation of integrity and honour-related oppression against a child shall be counted from the date on which the plaintiff turns or would have turned 18, and imposed prison sentences shall not be subject to statutory limitation.

The amendments will come into force on 1 April 2025. The majority of the legislative amendments also apply to offences that have been committed but at the time were not statute-barred.
