Increased information exchange to prevent and combat crime

Published:

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to introduce a new law under which municipalities, regions, schools and a number of public agencies are to provide certain information to the Swedish Police Authority and other law enforcement authorities without being impeded by secrecy. This obligation means that information must be provided upon request, but the bodies concerned shall also provide it on their own initiative.

The Riksdag also voted in favour of the Government’s proposal that social services and health and medical services shall have better opportunities to provide information of significance for law enforcement purposes.

The proposed rules give law enforcement authorities better opportunities to receive information from other actors, for example, about committed offences, suspected criminal structures and individuals with connections to criminality. This enhances their opportunities to prevent and combat crime, and prevent children and young people from becoming involved in criminality.

The new act and amendments will come into force on 1 April 2025.
