EU Rule of Law Report examined

The Riksdag has examined the Communication from the Commission on the 2024 Rule of Law Report. In the report, the European Commission presents a status report on efforts to protect and strengthen democratic institutions and values in the EU. The report contains information about the situation in the EU as a whole and in individual member states. It also contains recommendations to each member state for how the country can better comply with the rule of law.
The Riksdag underlines the importance of respect for fundamental rights and the rule of law. The Riksdag appreciates the Commission’s efforts to strengthen and defend the rule of law and notes that the annual report has come to play a central role in work to uphold the rule of law, not least as the Council’s rule of law dialogue is based on the report.
The Riksdag is positive to the fact that, according to the Commission, the EU better equipped to detect, prevent and address new challenges relating to the rule of law than it was five years ago. At the same time, the report reveals that there are serious shortcomings in all areas examined by the Commission.
The Riksdag notes with concern the problems that exist in several member states, and stresses the importance of continued efforts to strengthen respect for the rule of law throughout the EU.
The Riksdag put the report on file, which means that the matter is closed.
