The European Commission's Work Programme has been examined

The Committee on Foreign Affairs has examined the European Commission's Work Programme for 2026. The Committee and the Government consider the EU to be Sweden’s most important foreign policy platform for the major issues of our time and our continent, which concern the war, crime, climate and competitiveness.

The Committee shares the Commission’s assessment that the EU has to take a greater responsibility for its defence and its security. The Committee also considers that individual EU member states need to take greater responsibility for the EU’s defence. More needs to be done to strengthen the European capacity to face crises, conflicts and wars in Europe’s neighbourhood.

The EU should give its unwavering support to Ukraine, and the Committee considers that this is Europe's single most important task. The Committee wishes to see increased, strong and long-term support to Ukraine. The support should cover political, military, economic, humanitarian and legal aspects. The Committee believes that the EU should increase pressure on Russia. The EU needs to speed up the phasing out of fossil energy from Russia. The Committee supports the Government's efforts to use frozen Russian assets in support of Ukraine. Russia must pay for the damage it has caused Ukraine with its full-scale invasion.

The Committee considers that the EU should take the next step in Ukraine and Moldova’s processes of accession to the EU.

The Committee welcomes the Commission’s priority to ensure that the population of Gaza be given sufficient assistance. It is of the utmost importance that, according to the Government and the Committee, the import of humanitarian emergency assistance continues to increase. The EU should contribute to supporting the governance and reform of the Palestinian Authority and financing reconstruction. The Committee wishes to emphasise that Hamas cannot be part of the future governance of Gaza.

The Riksdag has filed the statement, which means that the matter is now closed.
