Stronger protection for children at risk of harm

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal to strengthen children’s opportunities to receive protection and support from the local Social Welfare Committee.
The Government’s proposal means that more public agencies, public agency employees and security guards will be obliged to immediately report to the Social Welfare Committee if they find out or suspect that a child is at risk of harm.
An obligation will also be introduced for certain staff in schools and other educational activities. This obligation will apply at the request of a Social Welfare Committee which is to provide information or conduct an investigation pursuant to the Children and Parents Code.
An extended period before deletion of 30 years from a child’s birth will also apply to certain documents in their personal file.
The amendments will come into force on 15 January 2026.
