Ban on bottom trawling in marine protected areas
Published:
The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposal which will make it possible for bottom trawling to be prohibited in marine protected areas, that is marine national parks, nature reserves, biotope protection areas or Natura 2000 sites. Bottom trawling means fishing with gear which is towed along the sea bottom.
The purpose of the proposal is to increase the protection of sensitive marine environments, even if this makes fishing in these areas more difficult.
The amendments will come into force on 1 June 2025.
