Measures in place to reduce the risk of disruption in the Chamber

A protective net has been hung up in front of the public gallery to prevent spectators from throwing objects into the Chamber of the Riksdag.

On 3 October, an incident occurred in which a spectator in the public gallery created a disturbance by throwing an object into the Chamber. As a result of the incident, the Riksdag Administration has hung up a protective net in front of parts of the public gallery. The net will be in place on a trial basis during the autumn.

“The work of the Parliament must not be disrupted by incidents like this. It must be possible for debates and hearings to continue without interruption. It is obviously also important that members of the Riksdag, ministers, staff and spectators should be able to feel safe and secure when they are in the Chamber. This is why we have put up this protective net and we will also increase cooperation with the police and have increased the presence of security officers at certain debates,” says Niklas Åström, Head of the Riksdag Administration’s Security Division.
