Yes to strategy for marine environmental policy

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal on a strategy for marine environmental policy.

The proposal contains overall principles that will apply to all marine environmental work.
The Government wishes to strengthen the application of ecosystem-based management, a method for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, biological diversity and ecosystem services. Among other things, work with sustainable management of fish resources will be more clearly coordinated with other marine environmental efforts.

Other points of departure are that eutrophication should decrease and that Sweden should expand and strengthen its protection of marine areas.

The proposal also stresses that Sweden needs to continue to work internationally to reduce emissions of hazardous substances into the marine environment, and to take active measures to implement the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
The Riksdag furthermore rejected proposals in motions, of which 70 proposals were submitted during the general private members’ motions period 2024.
