New law on vehicle clamping

Published:

The Riksdag has voted in favour of the Government’s proposals, among other things, for new vehicle clamping legislation. Clamping means that the vehicle is locked in place and cannot be driven.

One of the aims of the proposal is to improve compliance with the transport sector’s rules, and to increase road safety, for example, by preventing dangerous drivers or defective vehicles. The proposal also aims to improve opportunities to impose administrative pecuniary sanctions, which are charges not imposed by the judicial system, on those who breach rules in the field of commercial transport. The previous fixed time limit for how long a ban or measure such as clamping can apply will be removed.

The new act and other legislative amendments will come into force on 1 January 2025.
