Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the security policy challenges in the OSCE region and a special debate on the situation in the Middle East were among the topics discussed at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s summer session in Bucharest, Romania on 29 May–3 July.

During the meeting, a number of bilateral meetings and elections were held. The Chair of the Swedish delegation Björn Söder (Sweden Democrats) led a meeting between the Nordic-Baltic countries and delegations from Central Asia with the purpose of strengthening relations between the delegations. The Assembly decided to adopt the budget for 2024/25 presented by Treasurer Johan Büser (Social Democratic Party). It was noted that the economic challenges continue to be great as Russia has failed to pay its membership fee for the second year running.

Carina Ödebrink (Social Democratic Party) was elected Rapporteur to the Assembly’s Third General Committee, which focuses on democracy and human rights.

More than 220 parliamentarians were gathered at the summer session to debate and adopt policies on the proposals submitted to the meeting and the themes on the agenda. At the end of the meeting, speeches were held by Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminiţa-Teodora Odobescu and the Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Ian Borg.
