Stronger consumer protection in the area of gambling

New rules are to strengthen consumer protection in connection with gambling. The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal which seeks to limit problems caused by gambling, such as debt and addiction.
A requirement of written agreement for telephone sales of games will be introduced. After the telephone conversation, the consumer must accept the offer in writing for the agreement to be valid. The decision also means that gambling operators with a Swedish gambling licence will be entitled to access personal data about finances and health, provided by the players themselves, in order to be able to counteract excessive gambling. Furthermore, the decision entails increased penalties for gambling operators that breach the Money Laundering Act.
The new rules will come into force on 1 June 2024.
