More effective measures against the dissemination of terrorist content online

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government’s proposal, which contains supplementary provisions to the EU’s regulation on measures against the dissemination of terrorist content online.

According to the EU regulation, competent authorities, i.e. the Police Authority in Sweden, may issue orders for a hosting service provider to remove terrorist content from their hosting service. The provider is obliged to do so within an hour of receiving such an order.
The new legislation also makes it possible for the Swedish Police Authority to take decisions on conditional fines and penalties for hosting service providers who neglect their obligations. The legislation also enables the exchange of necessary information between the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Security Service.

The new rules will come into force on 1 July 2023.
