Current energy policy issues on the agenda when the Riksdag hosts the interparliamentary conference on the EU’s future energy supply
Published:
On 23–24 April 2023, the Riksdag will arrange an interparliamentary conference on the challenges and opportunities for the EU’s future energy supply. During the conference, primarily members from the EU’s national parliaments will meet to discuss current energy policy issues.
The conference is being held within the framework for the Riksdag’s part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union - the parliamentary dimension.
Challenges and opportunities in focus during the conference
The conference will be led by Tobias Andersson (Sweden Democrats), Chair of the Committee on Industry and Trade, and Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist (Centre Party), Deputy Chair of the Committee on Industry and Trade.
“The conference concerns challenges and opportunities for the EU’s future energy supply. The programme includes the security of energy supply and challenges for the energy markets in the shadow of an unsettled world order. The transition to more sustainable energy supply, research, development and innovation are also topics that will be raised,” says Tobias Andersson.
“The transition needs to take place in a way that is financially, socially and environmentally sustainable, using energy that is secure and affordable for households and businesses. Today, major technological progress is being made and new methods for producing and using energy are constantly being developed. The challenge lies, in particular, in obtaining enough clean energy and that it can be obtained quickly enough,” says Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist.
The Riksdag arranges eight conferences during the EU Presidency
Sweden is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January–June 2023. Within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency, the Riksdag is arranging eight conferences and meetings during this period, in which members of the national parliaments of the EU member states and of the European Parliament participate and discuss various matters. The conferences are part of continuing cooperation between the parliaments, also known as interparliamentary cooperation in the EU.
