The Parliamentary Ombudsmen (JO)
A complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsmen (JO) can be made by anybody who feels that they have been treated wrongly or unjustly by a public authority or an official employed by the civil service or local government.
- The Parliamentary Ombudsmen examine the compliance of the public authorities and individual officials with laws and ordinances, that is, that the administration of various matters is correct and that individual citizens receive fair treatment.
- The Parliamentary Ombudsmen can issue critical statements and propose that public authorities improve their routines. However, their statements are not binding.
- There are four Parliamentary Ombudsmen who are appointed by the Riksdag.
- The Parliamentary Ombudsmen are responsible for one element of the Riksdag's parliamentary control functions. Ensuring that the Government and public authorities perform their official duties correctly is one of the Riksdag's principal tasks.
