New act on economic sanctions against terrorism

The Riksdag has approved a legislative proposal from the Government concerning the freezing of assets in order to prevent and counter the financing of acts of terrorism.

The new act means that assets can be frozen for someone who is suspected on reasonable grounds for an offence under the Terrorist Offences Act, or who has been sentenced for an offence under the Terrorist Offences Act.

In addition, someone who, on grounds of the contents of a criminal investigation in another country, or who may be suspected on reasonable grounds of having committed an offence  in another country corresponding to an offence under the Terrorist Offences Act, will be covered by the new act.

It will also be possible to decide to temporarily freeze the assets of someone who has been listed by the UN Security Council or Sanctions Committee.

The purpose of the new provisions is for Sweden to meet its international commitments in the field of sanctions, and they will come into force on 1 January 2024.
