The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal on temporary amendments to the Swedish Environmental Code. The amendments will make it possible for the Government to examine an application to renew a permit for limestone mining.
In certain exceptional cases, it is possible for the Government to examine an application for a temporary permit to mine limestone. It should only be possible for it to examine an application if the activities are required in order to meet significant public interests, and if society's need for limestone cannot be met in any other way.
A precondition for such an application is, furthermore, that there is already an existing permit for mining, but that the activity cannot be completed as the permit is temporary.
The temporary amendment will come into force on 15 October 2021 and will cease to apply from 1 January 2022.
