The Swedish Coast Guard's work in the fields of crime prevention, maintaining order and control and supervision is to be regulated in a single piece of legislation in order to make the rules more coherent and easier to grasp.

The Swedish Coast Guard's work at sea will also put to better use by giving the agency greater responsibility for both crime prevention and maintaining order.

Police officers will be entitled to search vessels for weapons and other dangerous objects under the same conditions as those applying to searches of vehicles for such objects.

The Riksdag voted in favour of the Government's proposal. The new law and the legislative amendments it involves will come into force on 1 April 2019.
