Published: 8 November 2018 at 16.12

The Speaker will present a proposal to the Riksdag for a candidate for prime minister on 12 November. The Speaker's proposal will be Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party). When the proposal is presented, information will also be presented about which parties Ulf Kristersson intends to form a government with.

The proposal for a new prime minister will be presented and tabled in the Chamber at 10.30 a.m. on 12 November. The proposal will be tabled again on 13 November. The proposal will then be put to the vote in the Riksdag on 14 November at 9 a.m.

If the proposal for a new prime minister is approved, the prime minister will, as soon as possible, inform the Riksdag of the names of the other ministers. This can be done on 15 November at the earliest. A Council of State will then be held. Under these circumstances, the debate in connection with the caretaker government's budget bill will also be cancelled. A debate and decision on the budget frameworks is planned to take place on 12 December.

If the proposal for a new prime minister is not approved, the debate on the caretaker government's budget bill will take place as planned on 15 November.

On Thursday 27 September, the Speaker started the assignment of preparing a proposal for a new Prime Minister for the Riksdag to take a stand on. The assignment includes interview rounds with representatives of all the parties in the Riksdag and deliberations with the Deputy Speakers. The Speaker is also keeping King Carl XVI Gustaf informed of the situation regarding the assignment of presenting a proposal for a new Prime Minister.

Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party) and Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) have each been given the assignment of exploring the possibilities of forming a government that the Riksdag can tolerate. Neither of the assignments have resulted in a concrete proposal. On 30 October, the Speaker held talks with the party representatives in various constellations and since then he has had supplementary informal talks with various party representatives.
