The Speaker announces proposal for Prime Minister

Published: 23 November 2018 at 14.59

Today, on 23 November, the Speaker Andreas Norlén has announced that he intends to present a proposal for a candidate for prime minister to the Riksdag on Monday 3 December. The Speaker's proposed candidate will be Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party).

"The information I have received after the latest round of exploring the possibilities of forming a government has painted a somewhat new picture, even though many obstacles remain. With this announcement, I am giving the parties the necessary time to take a stand on the new situation and then adopt a position in the Chamber", says the Speaker Andreas Norlén.

The Speaker has urged Stefan Löfven (Social Democratic Party) to get back to him with information about the constellation of parties the proposal will apply to. After the Speaker has presented his proposal for a candidate for prime minister in the Chamber, the proposal will be tabled twice before it will probably be put to the vote in the Riksdag on 5 December.

Background

On Thursday 27 September, the Speaker started the assignment of preparing a proposal for a new Prime Minister for the Riksdag to take a stand on. The assignment includes interview rounds with representatives of all the parties in the Riksdag and deliberations with the Deputy Speakers. The Speaker is also keeping King Carl XVI Gustaf informed of the situation regarding the assignment of presenting a proposal for a new Prime Minister.

On 22 November, the Speaker received Annie Lööf's (Centre Party) report that her task of exploring the possibilities of forming a new government that can be tolerated by the Riksdag did not result in a concrete proposal. The Speaker has since conferred with the Deputy Speakers and spoken to the leaders of the parties represented in the Riksdag.
